The Secret Life of the American Teenager The Secret Life of the American Teenager is an American television series from 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton. The show debuted on ABC Family on July 1, 2008. The teen drama focuses on the relationships between families and friends dealing with the unexpected teenage pregnancy of character Amy Juergens, portrayed by Shailene Woodley.
The Secret Life ranked number one with the network's key demographic in its debut time slot versus cable television shows. The show earned the Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV Show during its premier season.
Season One will have a total of 23 episodes, split into two runs. The first run of 11 episodes ends September 9, 2008, and the second run is scheduled to begin in January 2009. The show has also been picked up by Canadian Broadcaster Citytv who started airing Season 1 in Canada on September 3, 2008.

The show follows Amy Juergens, a smart and talented girl who got pregnant after a one night stand with Ricky Underwood, a drummer in the school marching band. The show basically shows how she faces her fears and challenges through the pregnancy. It also follows the lives of Grace Bowman,Ricky Underwood,Adrian Lee, Jack Pappas and Amy's family:Anne Juergens,George Juergens, and Ashley Juergens. |

- Shailene Woodley as Amy Juergens, a 15-year-old girl. She is pregnant with the child of her bandmate Ricky. She is Ben's girlfriend and the show basically revolves around her.
- Kenny Baumann as Ben Boykevich, Amy's boyfriend. Ben asks Amy to marry him after he learns of her pregnancy. He constantly reminds her of his offer of marriage, with his father's support. He is known for telling Amy that he loves her.
- Daren Kagasoff as Ricky Underwood, a drummer in the school band. Ricky is in foster care because he was sexually abused by his father, who "stole his childhood." Ricky is a womanizer, but participates in therapy and counseling with Lauren's dad. He is the father of Amy's baby. He is romantically involved with Adrian. He and Grace have both shown some feelings for each other, telling his counselor that's he's in love with Grace and both share their first kiss in the season finale.
- Francia Raisa as Adrian Lee, the "bad girl" Amy's school. She is a member of the majorettes squad, and does exceedingly well at school. She seeks a real relationship with Ricky although she dumped him when he wouldn't run away with her. She seems to get more jealous as Grace and Ricky start heating up.
- Megan Park as Grace Kathleen Bowman, a devoted Christian. She once wore a purity ring (referred to as a promise ring on the show) that symbolized her desire to wait until marriage for sex. She is the head cheerleader, and is very perky and bubbly. She is Jack's ex-girlfriend. She and Ricky share their first kiss in the season finale saying that she is very attracted to Ricky.
- Greg Finley II as Jack Pappas, a football player and Grace's ex-boyfriend. Grace ends her relationship with Jack after she learns that Adrian performed oral sex on him. He repeatedly tries to rekindle his romantic relationship with Grace.
- Renee Olstead as Madison Cooperstein. Madison is one of Amy's best friends. She supports Amy with her pregnancy,but unknowingly spreads a rumor about Amy being pregnant. She also begins dating Lauren's brother Jason and they catch Lauren making out with Ricky. She is a big mouth and blurted out that Ricky seeing Lauren's dad for therapy.
- Camille Winbush as Lauren Treacy. Lauren is also one of Amy's best friends. She also supports Amy with her pregnancy,but unknowingly spreads a rumor about Amy being pregnant. She's single but is caught by Madison and her older brother Jason. She also tends to be a know-it-all causing a fight between her and Amy in the season finale.
- Jorge Pallo as Marc Molina, the school guidance counselor who ends up counseling Ben on issues outside the standard duties of a school guidance counselor. He disappears from school in the season finale for unknown reasons.
- Mark Derwin as George Juergens, Amy's father. He is discontent with his marriage, and once cheats on his wife with Adrian's mother. George was previously married to Mrs. Kathleen Bowman, Grace's mother, who cheated on George during the marriage.
- Molly Ringwald as Anne Juergens, Amy's mother. When discussing Amy's pregnancy, Anne reveals how she became pregnant at a young age and eloped with George when she was 18, resulting in a rocky marriage. She says she isn't very attracted to her husband anymore.
- India Eisley as Ashley Juergens, Amy's rebellious 13-year-old sister. She occasionally lies to her parents to protect Amy.
